Renovation Fun: Parquet Flooring

» by Hui Nih & Lybil - 9 comments
Due to the lack of time, we planned to settle only the basic renovations such as painting and flooring. It was really an eye-opening experience for me to deal with the timber flooring all by ourselves. Frankly I was so shock to discover that the raw materials are so expensive, labor costs are even more expensive! (from 20€ - 40€ per hour!) With two kids around, I strongly encourage my man to hire someone to help him in changing the tiles as I will not be able to do the job with him at all. But still we have to shop for the raw materials by ourselves, I mean four of us together :)

These are the materials involved:

(The price for the parquet ranges from 13€ ~ 51€ per meter square in this shop, which are considered moderately priced as we have seen more 'high-end' parquets in other shops. The other three pictures shown above are the layers that we have to install before putting on our parquet, ie: sound protector, humid protector etc ...)

Not to forget the Polyurethane, and other finishing products too ...

Not an easy task to shop for raw material with the young ones because this place was quite dusty and stuffy;

We have lots more shopping to do in the coming weeks, anybody interested to babysit my kids?
Yayaya, I know ~ It is indeed a wishful thinking :)

(p/s: I'm so not used to the European's DIY concept hence the rants :P )

Involve everyone in the family, not an easy job to go round search for the right material u want...happy hunting..

is it Europe country favor on parquet instead of marbles or tiles? we don't like parquet flooring as if it caught long term humidity may causing other problem like white ants and etc...

btw, I don't see u need much renovation..especially the kitchen, looks quite complete with cabinets and all...do it bit by bit la...sure u can make ur home a good and comfortable one..

HN: Oh, I noticed that most houses here install parquet or carpet, instead of marbles/ tiles. Yeap, not much renovation need to be done as we have cancelled the idea of building a wall, to have an extra bedroom ... Now we are busy to shop for furnitures instead :) Thanks for showing your concern Judy :)

Did you buy this new apmt? Looks very nice. In UK, or rather in London, it is not easy to find spacious space like what you have, esp with nice views. I think once you have your parquet installed, it'll be great. Alternative is to get laminated floors but parquet is nicer.

I know the Europeans love their DIY, quite a contrast to us Asians. :P (Lazy us) But i do love watching all the property-related shows, some will show you before & after DIY. Absolutely love watching these shows! Do they have those in Nederlands?
